Time for pumpkins, lanterns, candy, candy, spiders and spider webs, haunted houses and candy, candy and ghosts, haunted houses and goblins. Scarecrows and more candy!!!! Whewwwwww.

Some things amaze me about Halloween.

  • People go out of their way to create something which is intended to scare people.
  • People. Ironically, are more amused than scared.
  • Goblins, ghosts and witches all of a sudden come out in the daytime.
  • People buy candy to give as gifts to kids who can’t eat it, because they can’t trust people who give them candy.
  • So the only one who benefits are the people selling the candy.

And this activity is so powerful, that adults hesitate to say no to children, even when they don’t believe in it themselves.

The tradition now is for churches and parents who want to dissuade children from taking part in Halloween related events, and “trick or treating” to provide a substitute activity. I never got the wisdom in that. It goes in the same category of electronic cigarettes. “The real thing is bad, but we can still do it in a different way.” We know we are still inhaling chemicals, but at least there is no smoke to offend anyone.  “And then we tell children to “Just say no” Is there something wrong with saying “no” without a “BUT”.

This article is a follow up to the last one on how chronic inflammation is created, and the dangers of it. 

I actually was not planning on the topic of inflammation being a two part article, but it seems to have resonated with a lot of readers. One reader asked for an insight into what foods cause inflammation.

So here goes. PROTECT YOUR HEALTH AND WELLNESS.

To quickly recap the basics on inflammation in the body:

  • Inflammation can be very dangerous to your HEALTH and WELLNESS.

    Inflammation is the body’s response to physical injury. The body’s immune system sends proteins and white blood cells to the site to start the healing process.

  • Interaction of cells with oxygen sometimes causes damage. The damaged cells are called free radicals which attack good cells. (This is known as oxidative stress)
  • In the case of damage caused by excessive free radicals, the injury becomes chronic and continuous so the inflammatory response is also chronic and continuous.
  • Inflammation build up in the body causes all kinds of illnesses. (some argue most illnesses)
  • All medical names for inflammatory conditions end in “..its”. As in bronchitis or arthritis.
  • Anti-oxidants combat this kind of oxidation of cells, and limit the need for these inflammatory responses.

How dangerous is body inflammation?

These an other questions, will be addressed in this article.
Recently I had two simple encounters that caused me to be thinking about the topic of inflammation in the body.

Someone close to me caught a thorn in their finger, and decided to ignore it until a few days later, when it began to hurt. Of course by this time, the inflammation had set in, making it rather tender and more painful to remove. The person was honestly surprised after I had broken the skin with a needle and squeezed the inflammation out, that it was much less painful, and easier to remove the thorn.

And secondly, I was talking to a person, who is suffering from Arthritis, and literally was not aware that arthritis was caused by inflammation. Takes me back to this. Few things just happen. They are usually caused. No invisible ninjas banging on your knee. There is a real reason for the pain and agony.

So I thought that I would do a brief look at the topic of inflammation. This topic is so vast, this medium would only allow for a peek into inflammation and how it affects your HEALTH and WELLNESSRead the rest of this entry

When I was in high school, there came a time when I was lost in Mathematics. I think I lost my way somewhere in the fractions arena. After that everything else was a blur. I couldn’t understand much. I was frustrated. I felt inadequate, and often wondered what do some people have that I don’t have? I eventually gave up on myself and Mathematics, and concluded that Mathematics was not for me. So I concentrated on my other subjects, and gained enough GCE passes to become a teacher. So I entered teacher’s college and met a mathematics tutor who knew that:

  • Too many people lost their way in Mathematics.
  • Most people could learn mathematics, with the right teaching.
  • Mathematics was indeed fascinating, and she had the right mindset to show that to us.
  • Teachers had to understand and at least like Mathematics in order to teach it successfully.

GMO stands for:- Genetically Modified Organism.

This can be a plant or animal. It is when genetic engineers merge DNA’s from different species to alter the composition and features of a plant or animal. (That is the simple explanation. Much more complex)

It goes a bit further than traditional cross-breeding since the products are unstable and cannot occur naturally. I discovered some scary things in my research on GMO”s, and some interesting things about hybrid fruits.

Crossbreeding is more like grafting trees, and making hybrids of plants to achieve things like seedless watermelons, PLUOTS (cross between a plum and apricot), and a grapefruits (pummel, sweet orange).

Hybrids usually produce bigger and/or sweeter fruits.

Genetic modification goes a bit further by manipulating the genes and DNA to achieve much more complex results.
