FLAXSEED OIL comes from a tree that originated in ancient Egypt and China thousands of years ago.

Flaxseed oil has many health benefits, including healthy skin.

Flaxseed oil has many health benefits, including healthy skin.

It was once the leading crops for cloth in Europe and North America. Historically, flaxseed oil was used mainly in Europe for inflammatory diseases (including heart conditions) and hormone related illnesses.

Now the seed is more recognized for heart health. Flaxseed oil softens skin, because of its abundance of essential fatty acids.

Flaxseed oil is an anti-inflammatory plant-based oil, and can be used to treat acne, eczema, psoriasis, sunburn and rosacea.

Flax is also called linseed. There is an industrial version of linseed oil (sold in hardware stores) that is not for consumption.

SEA-BUCKTHORN OIL: In spite of its name it does not come from the sea. The oil comes from a shrub, which bears berries, and the oil comes from the seeds of the fruit. Sea Buckthorn oil has a long history, and knowledge of its nutritional and healing effects, is widespread.

Sea Buckthorn oil is rich in Omega, 3, 6, 7, and 9 . It can be used to ease skin irritation, roughness, and for inflammation in joints. It is widely touted as excellent for acne and rosasea.

It is also good for skin exfoliation, moisturizing, burns and acne.  An ample supply of Vitamins A  (retinol) and Vitamin E makes it anti-aging for skin.

MACADAMIA NUT OIL is known for its Omega 7, vitamin A (retinol), and vitamin E content.

One of the many amazing benefits of this oil, is that it has high levels of palmitoleic acid, which contains many great anti-aging compounds.

Some of these compounds have been found to decrease the rate at which skin matures. Which means that it will assist in reversing the signs of aging skin?

Marula oil from Kenya and other parts of the African continent, protects the skin from sun damage, fights against free radicals and reduces the visible signs of aging. It is one of the most ant-oxidant rich natural oils.

blackseed oil is good for your health, but also for your skin.

blackseed oil is good for your health, but also for your skin.

BLACK SEED OIL comes from black cumin seeds. This oil has been used in Middle East for centuries for healing. The mantra that follows it is that “It can cure everything except death”

You will probably not see this listed as a skin-healing oil, but I turned it into one, and am delighted with the results.  Natural healing professionals swear by this oil for healing the body. It didn’t take me long after buying it to realize that I could not drink it. Instead I settled for the capsules (only a fraction of volume of a tea spoon)   so I opted for the next best choice to put it on my skin. After all, whatever goes on your skin ends up in the body.

There are a many other plant-based oils which are excellent for your skin, but I don’t want to confuse you too much. If you want to introduce your skin to natural healing and regenerative oil, chose a couple. Start slowly, maybe on nights or weekend, and see how it goes.

Here are some suggestions of the oils that are best for specific skin conditions.

DISCOLORATION:   Vitamin rich oils like pomegranate, avocado, rosehip seed, marula, coconut, or argan oil.

OILY SKIN:    Grape seed, tea-tree, and hazelnut oils are natural anti-septics. So are lavender oil and lemon oil.

We used to think that if you had oily skin, oil was your enemy and you should only use alcohol based products.  These actually dry out the skin and you end up with dry flaky and wrinkled skin.  Oil is more likely to dissolve in an oil, and a natural antiseptic is safer for the skin.

ACNE: Tea tree oil (anti-septic). Studies have found that 5 percent tea tree oil is as effective at treating acne as 5 percent benzoyl peroxide.Sea buckthorn oil is another option.

REPAIR:   Black currant oil, and chamomile oil are good for redness and irritation.   The fatty acids also make coconut oil, jojoba, marula, macadamia, flaxseed, and sea buckthorn oils also good for red, chapped or sunburned skin.

Since black seed oil is also anti-inflammatory for the body, it may be good for healing the skin.

VERY DRY SKIN:   Cold pressed  olive oil penetrates the skin, and softens dead layers to reveal a new healthy outer layer of skin.

ANTI AGING :  Oils rich in anti-oxidants and omega 3 reduce inflammation, promote healthy collagen. Among them are avocado oil, pomegranate, acai, and sea buckthorn, and marula oils.

ALL of these oils are available readily online, and are widely used in some cosmetic preparations. Why depend on a manufacturer to give you a little oil in their product, when you can have the pure oil?

IT IS NOT UNUSUAL to see a bit of disruption when you first use natural plant-based oils. Sometimes it is the action of  extract impurities, and inflammation from the skin. Wait 2 weeks before deciding if it is for you.

While it is not an oil, I swear by pineapple for cleansing and brightening the skin. The citric acid removes the dry outer layer of skin leaving it bright and vibrant. If you have tender skin, mix it with a little oil at first.

The pineapple treatment is like a light, safe, quick, cheap chemical peel. Simply rub pineapple on to your skin. Let it dry and leave for a few minutes. Use a light scrub and rinse. You will be pleasantly surprised.

You also get the extra benefit of knowing  that your body is also being fed nutrients.

Most plant-based natural oils are reasonably priced. A few may appear to be expensive. But when you consider that a little goes a long way, they are very cost effective. So if you have to spend a few extra dollars for pure and natural, remember the dangers of processed skin care products .
