WHAT’S IN YOUR FOOD …….THE GOOD STUFF   (PEAS AND BEANS)

peas and beansA few days ago, I was talking to someone about my blogging. The question was asked “What are you writing about today?”  On hearing my response, My good friend continued:” Do you ever write about anything positive?”  You know that’s a good friend, who would not hesitate to point out a flaw, even one that bore the potential to be perceived  as critical.

But I was Oh so grateful for the pointer, because once I thought about it, I began to realize that my points of view were bordering on being negative. I ws automatically assuming that it was more crucial to point out what we are doing wrong, that is doing damage to our health.  We can also reverse damage by supplementing with the right nutrients.

It got me to thinking, that I should devote more time to highlighting some of the easy and positive changes we can make to enhance our efforts to attain and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Read the rest of this entry

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM READING LABELS….…EPISODE 1

food-label. Lots of strange words.

food-label. Lots of strange words.

A few years ago, I Figured out that I was gluten intolerant and started on a gluten free diet (or so I thought).

I thought it was a foregone conclusion that once I didn’t bake with flour, ate quinoa instead of rice, and learned that almost any bean can be made into a four, that it will be well.

After all the adjusting, my symptoms persisted. It was not before long that I discovered the vastness of my mistakes, by not reading food labels carefully.

I HAD TO DO A DOUBLE TAKE AND START OVER

I could no longer take anything for granted.  I started paying more attention , and especially  by reading labels.

Not only did I learn how widespread the use of wheat and corn is, in the processed food industry, I learned some things that the average person probably never would consider, in regards to processed foods and the ingredients they contain. I find it to be so disturbing, and at the same time fascinating, that I thought I would share some of them with you. Read the rest of this entry

WHAT’S IN YOUR FOOD…………..COFFEE

WHAT’S IN YOUR FOOD        COFFEE

We have been taking a closer look at what is in your food. For the most part you will find that as we go on this journey we will find many invaders into our foods that are harmful rather than helpful to you individual health and wellness.

Healthy goodness in a cup

Healthy goodness in a cup

We have looked at some of our breakfast staples so far. Today we will look at our coffee.

For the most part coffee is being discovered to be a rather healthy beverage. It is a natural, plant based food. It is usually grown in remote mountainous regions where the plants have access to cleaner air. It possesses numerous anti-oxidants and other good nutrition. The issues arise when we add other things like cream, sugar, caramel, and (God knows what else. I sure don’t) to the coffee and turn it into a dessert that are more calorie dense than cake.

One of the areas where we may have concerns about the coffee we drink, is in the processing. Drying, grinding preservation, etc. Instant coffee goes through a bit more processing, and in some cases the coffee is extended with additional substances. Just one more reason to read your labels, and don’t skip over words and abbreviations that you are not familiar with. They may be a camouflage. Read the rest of this entry

WHAT’S IN YOUR FOOD …… BREAKFAST CEREALS

WHAT’S IN YOUR FOOD   BREAKFAST CEREALS

DISCLAIMER:  This is not an attempt to discourage you from having cereal. This is simply providing information, that you may not have had time to consider.

It is also an attempt to open your curiosity in case you want to learn more about what are in those crispy flakes or geometric shapes.

Perhaps you are one who grabs a quick bowl of cereal, cover it in milk and go. Do you ask yourself…”Is this contributing to my personal health and wellness?”

cereals are mostly made from grains.

cereals are mostly made from grains.

POINTS TO PONDER

  • Most cereals are made from grain. Whether it is rice, corn, wheat, oats, or any combination of any of them. A grain is usually the basic ingredient.
  • Depending on what part of the globe your cereal is manufactured, it could be made from genetically modified grains.

In case you are not aware of what that means, the WHO says  “Genetically modified (GM) foods are foods derived from organisms whose genetic material (DNA) has been modified in a way that does not occur naturally.”

To put it simply, it is when geneticists and agri-scientists mess with the DNA of the seeds in an effort to morph them into a farmers dream. They are given built in instructions. Grow quickly. Yield more, and make sure the insects and worms don’t get to eat any. I call them Frankenstein foods. Read the rest of this entry

WHAT’S IN YOUR FOOD…….ORANGE JUICE

WHATS IN YOUR FOOD…….ORANGE JUICE

You know, some things perplex me more than they would most people. I am always trying to understand everything, and never taking too much as it is presented.

For example, I believe in the English language. With all its nuances, and deflections and old  Anglo-Saxon derivations, and hidden connotations, it usually comes down to meaning what it says. If you take it literally, orange-juice should refer to —juice from an orange. Right?

IS IT REALLY?

An orange is a tropical fruit that is bright orange in color. Has vitamin C among other nutrients. See foods with more Vitamin C than oranges.

Juice is a liquid extracted from  a part of some kind of vegetation. Hence the explanation of what is orange juice.

I am not much of an orange lover. I find an orange when I am baking something that calls for orange rind. But the few times that I have juiced an orange, (usually for someone else) I somehow never managed to capture, the color, the thickness, or the vibrancy that I see in bottles.
