WHAT’S IN YOUR FOOD? Archives

GMO’s are a big part of our food supply

Do you know what is in it?

Do you know what is in it?

GMO stands for:- Genetically Modified Organism.

This can be a plant or animal. It is when genetic engineers merge DNA’s from different species to alter the composition and features of a plant or animal. (That is the simple explanation. Much more complex)

It goes a bit further than traditional cross-breeding since the products are unstable and cannot occur naturally. I discovered some scary things in my research on GMO”s, and some interesting things about hybrid fruits.

Crossbreeding is more like grafting trees, and making hybrids of plants to achieve things like seedless watermelons, PLUOTS (cross between a plum and apricot), and a grapefruits (pummel, sweet orange).

Hybrids usually produce bigger and/or sweeter fruits.

Genetic modification goes a bit further by manipulating the genes and DNA to achieve much more complex results.

Hear how “THE DOCTORS” summarized it briefly.

Artificial sweeteners. Are they a good alternative?

Artificial sweeteners. Are they a good alternative?

This topic has been in the news recently, and I thought I should draw your attention to the different sides of this debate on ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS. It appears there has been a decline in the consumption of diet sodas and other beverages sweetened with artificial sweeteners.  And so a campaign was initiated  to convince buyers that it is safe.

Also in the new recently is the  results of an Italian study that has issued a caution when it comes to using sucralose.

Some of the artificial sweeteners on the market are:

  • Aacesulfame potassium has 0 calories and a slightly bitter taste. It cannot be broken down by the body, so it is supposed to be passed out in tact. (huh?)
  • Sucralose has 0 calories, is about 600 times sweeter than sugar, and has an artificial taste.
  • Saccharin has 0 calories, is about 300 times sweeter than sugar, and has the ability to cross the placenta.
  • Aspartame has 4 calories per gram, is around 80 to 200 times sweeter than sugar, and contains an ingredient that breaks down into methanol.
  • Neotame has 0 calories, is about 8000 times sweeter than sugar, and contains a compound that breaks down into methanol.

Other artificial sweeteners on the market are Sorbitol and Mannitol xylitol

These are marketed by familiar brand names with which you may be familiar.

red wine can be a healthy indulgence

red wine can be a healthy indulgence

May be you even know that it is associated with red wine.  Can you explain what resveratrol is?

Hopefully you will be able to make a confident statement from now on.  Resveratrol  is a polyphenol that is found only in red wine. A polyphenol is a particular set of anti-oxidant. Anti-oxidants are found in some form in most fruits and vegetables, and help to clean up free radicals in the body. It is like using lemon to clear up rust build up.

The foods richest in anti-oxidants are mostly the ones with dark red, blue and black colors.

Quercetin is another form of flavonoid found in red wine that is known to have tremendous health benefits. Read about it here.     http://www.naturalnews.com/029182_quercetin_health.html

It is believed that anti-oxidants prevent against, and help to prevent inflammation in the body.
