You know, some things perplex me more than they would most people. I am always trying to understand everything, and never taking too much as it is presented.

For example, I believe in the English language. With all its nuances, and deflections and old  Anglo-Saxon derivations, and hidden connotations, it usually comes down to meaning what it says. If you take it literally, orange-juice should refer to —juice from an orange. Right?


An orange is a tropical fruit that is bright orange in color. Has vitamin C among other nutrients. See foods with more Vitamin C than oranges.

Juice is a liquid extracted from  a part of some kind of vegetation. Hence the explanation of what is orange juice.

I am not much of an orange lover. I find an orange when I am baking something that calls for orange rind. But the few times that I have juiced an orange, (usually for someone else) I somehow never managed to capture, the color, the thickness, or the vibrancy that I see in bottles. I am about to embark on a series called “what’s in your food?” In it we shall enhance our knowledge of what is in our food that helps, and what harms the body as it struggles to maintain life.

Before we begin to examine what is in our food, perhaps we should take a look at why we need to examine our food. How it is produced, processed and prepared.

It is no secret that in the western world we are experiencing an unprecedented amount of sickness and disease. And Mostly of what has now been coined “lifestyle diseases”. These are various types of cancer, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, heart disease, pulmonary conditions, inflammatory conditions, auto immune diseases and mental disorders. Indications are that they can be prevented however.


These lifestyle diseases are categorized as chronic in that they are usually long term, progressive, and can be controlled but not cured. They are now a leading cause of disabilities and death, and have the potential to reduce the quality of your life, and decrease your years of productivity. People consume food for various reasons. Sometimes, less consideration is given to what liquids we consume than what solid foods we eat. Consuming cow’s milk has been a tradition in many regions of the world, and it has been taken for granted that it is wholesome.

Isn’t it interesting that after a human baby is weaned the mother stops producing milk. The same thing happens to the cow, (in normal circumstances). But modern day producers manipulate it so that it can keep giving us milk which was intended to plump up a calf in a short time.

We make decisions on what we do and do not eat for various reasons. Sometimes it is basically what we are used to (what our ancestors taught us). It may be based on an allergy. It may be because we want to lose or gain weight. Every now and again a fad comes along and we feel like jumping on the band wagon.

But sometimes we make conscious decisions based on newly gained information, or a bad experience of a loved one. I recently came to the conclusion which is basically an extension (……to zero) of a decision that is almost half a century old.

Eye shadow, lipstick, and nail polish contain between twenty-five and thirty-five harmful chemicals. Things like hair spray foundation, shampoo and deodorant contain between ten and twenty five chemicals. Other cosmetic and beauty products contain different quanties and various intensities of harmful chemicals. Artificial nails use some of the harshest chemicals.


The effects on the body of these chemicals range from:

  •  Irritation of skin, eyes, nose and throat.
  • Heightened allergies.
  • Compromised immune systems. This is an open door to an unbelievable amount of dangers.
  • Changes in cell structure, leaving them more susceptible to damage and cancer growth.
  • Cancer
  • Hormone disruption. Think about what this means for ten seconds.
  • Damage body organs, including lungs and heart .
  • Fertility issues

I know that you can add. But do you add up the amount of harmful chemicals that you bombard your blood stream with each day?  What goes through our pores are just as crucial as what goes in our mouth.
